DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SELLING AND MARKETING

Many people, including some executives, still do not understand the difference between selling and marketing. In fact, many think the terms are synonymus. However, as shown below, there are vast differences between the two activities.

Selling

  1. Emphasis is on the product
  2. Company first makes the product and then figures out how to sell it
  3. Management is sales volume orinted
  4. Planning is short-run oriented, in terms of today's products and markets
  5. Stresses needs of seller
Marketing
  1. Emphasis is on customers wants
  2. Compaby first determines customers wants then figuresout how to make and deliver a product to satisfy those wants
  3. Management is profit oriented
  4. Planning is long-run oriented, in terms of new products, tomorrow's markets, and future growth
  5. Stresses wants of buyers
